After three years as head coach of the Zambia national team, former Chelsea and Ghana manager Avram Grant has left his role, 7 weeks and 4 days before the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) General Secretary Machacha Shepande confirmed the development, stating that both parties agreed to a mutual separation to “chart a new way forward for the Chipolopolo.”
“The Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) has agreed to mutually separate with Zambia Senior Men’s National Team coach Avram Grant. The two parties agreed to mutually separate with FAZ wishing Mr. Grant the best of luck in his future endeavours,” Shepande said.
The 70-year-old was appointed Zambia’s head coach in 2022 on a two-year contract, which was later extended after he guided the team to qualification for the 2023 AFCON.
During his tenure, he was in charge of 30 matches across all competitions, recording 11 wins, 15 losses, and four draws, along with securing two consecutive AFCON qualifications. However, Grant managed just one win in his last eight games and failed to lead Zambia to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, a poor run that reportedly prompted the separation. The government also suspended financial support to the national team following the disappointing results.

Avram Grant’s message
In his farewell message, Grant expressed gratitude and pride in his time with the team:
“After almost three years, my time as head coach of the Zambia men’s national team has come to an end. I am proud to leave the team in a much better position than when I inherited it.
“I’m proud that after not qualifying for the African Cup of Nations in years, I managed them to two successive AFCONs and the team are strong and ready to face the challenges ahead.
“I hope that one day this great country qualifies for a World Cup for the first time in its long football history.
“I would like to thank the players and my staff who did a great job in challenging conditions and most importantly to the people of Zambia who were so supportive.
“Thank you former President Andrew Kamanga for giving me the opportunity to manage this nation. You played a major part in our success. And to all the good people at @fazfootball who stood by me.
“I wish the team every success for the future.”
Zambia is set to participate in the Morocco 2025 AFCON, where they have been drawn in Group A alongside Morocco, Mali, and Comoros. The tournament will kick off on December 21.
Regarding Grant’s replacement, FAZ stated: “The rest of the details will be communicated in due course. For now can only thank Mr. Grant for his contribution to the Zambian game.”
