Kennedy Musonda and Alex N’gonga, both Zambian strikers, stole the show on Sunday night as Tanzanian outfit Young African(Yanga) defeated Congolese giants TP Mazembe 3-1 in the CAF Confederation Cup group stage.

The two contributed a goal each to their respective teams.

Musonda, a former Power Dynamos striker, gave the home team the lead in the seventh minute and also assisted on the second goal.

That was Musonda’s first goal in the CAF competition for Yanga in his second appearance.

His compatriot Ng’onga, on the other hand, scored the only goal for his side in the 80th minute with a well-taken free kick.

N’gonga has now scored in all games he has played for TP Mazembe since joining them from Zambian Super League side Nkana football club.

It was also his second appearance and goal in the Confederations Cup after scoring on his debut a week ago when Mazembe defeated Real Bamako 3-1.

N’gonga has played 7 games and scored nine goals across all competitions.

Mazembe and Yanga are stuck on three points each from the two games played so far in Group D. Tunisian side US Monastir is topping the group with 4 points.

The Congolese will face US Monastir in their next fixture while Real Bamako will host the Tanzanians.

“Call Musonda and Bazo to the national team”

Meanwhile, some Zambians have taken to social media to suggest that the duo be named to the national team ahead of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers next month, while others believe they are not good enough to wear the Chipolopoo jersey.

RevJoseph Makina Euliko a Facebook user wrote: “Kennedy Musonda will be critical to Avram’s plan to go back to AFCON! Lethal striker.”

Nalumango Macdonald Waluka Jr. also wrote: “Even Moses Phiri(Simba SC), Lazarus Kambole (Zesco United), should be included. We need a Zambian team that can compete with Africa’s best teams.”

“Awe bazo ku national team likula bad let him be che(Alex Ng’onga is not good enough for the national team), he almost killed us with BP last time.” – Chris Kelvin also shared his thoughts via Facebook.

Chiko Chikagalala, another Facebook blogger, believes the coach should be allowed to work with the players he wants.

“Only the coach has the final say if at all they will fit in his game plan. Luck to them,” he wrote.
