Joshua Mutale scored for Simba SC in the second leg of their CAF Confederation Cup final against Morocco’s RS Berkane on Sunday.
Mutale, who had been largely unused throughout the tournament, was handed a rare start in the highly anticipated clash. He made an immediate impact by putting the Tanzanian side ahead in the 17th minute.
Simba had lost the first leg 2-0 in Morocco and needed to score at least three unanswered goals to win the title outright—or two to force extra time and potentially penalties.
As Simba continued to push for another goal, they were dealt with a major VAR heartbreak in the 73rd minute. Steven Mukwala’s goal was overturned for offside, keeping RS Berkane’s aggregate advantage intact.
Tensions ran high throughout the match, with Simba’s Yusuph Kagoma getting red card early in the 50th minute.
However, just as Mutale’s early goal rekindled hopes of a comeback, Berkane dashed those dreams with a dramatic 93rd-minute equalizer from substitute Soumaila Sidibe. The match ended 1-1, giving the Moroccan side a 3-1 aggregate victory and crowning them champions of the competition.
This is RS Berkane’s third CAF Confederation Cup championship, having now lifted the trophy in 2020, 2022, and 2025.
