Power Dynamos goalkeeper Willard Mwanza has said his team is highly motivated ahead of their next CAF Champions League fixture against RS Berkane after securing their first victory of the group stage.
The Zambian champions edged Nigeria’s Rivers United 1–0 on Sunday evening to register their maiden win in the CAF Champions League group phase.
Power Dynamos had endured a difficult start to the campaign, suffering a 3–0 defeat to RS Berkane and a 1–0 loss to Pyramids FC, before settling for a goalless draw at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium with Rivers United.
Sunday’s victory has kept Dynamos’ hopes of qualifying for the knockout stage alive, with the team now required to win their remaining two group matches.
Kondwani Chiboni’s 50th-minute strike proved decisive, while goalkeeper Mwanza produced four crucial saves to preserve his fourth consecutive clean sheet across all competitions.
“We didn’t start well, but that is water under the bridge,” Mwanza told BolaNews in an interview. “The win has motivated us to do well in the remaining two games.”
He added: “It’s a good chance for the team to secure qualification to the next round of the competition.”
Dynamos back in contention
The result lifted Power Dynamos to third place in Group A with four points. RS Berkane sit second with seven points, Rivers United remain bottom on one point, while Pyramids FC lead the group with 10 points.
Mwanza has been in outstanding form, having not conceded in his last four games across all competitions. He believes Power Dynamos still have a chance to advance to the knockout stage.
“This is football; anything is possible. We will fight until the end,” he said. “We’re not going to give up easily, and we will make sure we collect the much-needed results at home. We know what is at stake and what is expected of us, so we are ready to deliver.”
Power Dynamos will host RS Berkane at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium this Saturday in Ndola. A win will see them move into second place ahead of their final match against defending champions Pyramids, who thumped Berkane 3-0 on Sunday.
