In the first leg of the CAF Champions League final, played on Sunday night at the Cairo International Stadium, Sven Vandenbroeck’s side who are also the defending champions Wydad Athletic Club were defeated 2-1 by Egyptian giants Al-Ahly.
The Egyptians broke the deadlock just before halftime through Percy Tau, with Mahmoud Kahraba scoring the second goal in the 59th minute.
Wydad scored their vital away goal in the 86th minute through substitute Said Bouhra.
Al Ahly will try to avoid defeat at all costs in order to win their 11th title. Wydad will also need to win the return match with at least a 1-0 scoreline to defend their title.
The final Leg of the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League will be played next weekend at the Mohamed V Stadium in Casablanca.
Meanwhile, Wydad coach Sven Vandenbroeck told the media that he was impressed with the team’s performance despite the defeat.
He expressed confidence that his team still has a chance to win the title next weekend.
“At 2-0, you think you are dead, but with an away goal, it opens all the doors,” Sven said. “I’m very happy with what we did as a group. Everyone who was given a chance to play performed their role well. This is a very United group and we played as a team. I hope we can be rewarded with the title next weekend.”
