The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has approved Malawi’s Bingu National Stadium to host the first and second preliminary rounds of the 2024 CAF Interclub Competitions.
The development comes after Malawi filed an appeal against CAF’s initial decision to ban the stadium and other 25 countries due to their status.
However, shortly after the ban, Malawi’s sports ministry and the Football Association of Malawi (FAM) filed an appeal, claiming that CAF made its decision without physically visiting the stadium.
According to a letter seen by BolaNews and addressed to FAM, CAF has only allowed the stadium to host interclub competitions.
“Following the review of the report by CAF, please note that the stadium is approved for use specifically in the CAF Interclub Competitions 2024/25, 1st and 2nd preliminary rounds. Notwithstanding, the stadium management is required to ensure that the pitch conditions are maintained and improved to host the upcoming CAF matches,” reads part of the communication.
This means that FCB Nyasa Big Bullets, who were drawn against Zambia’s Red Arrows, will play their first CAF Champions League preliminary matches in Malawi.
Bullets were still looking for a new home after CAF’s early decision to ban the stadium.
The Malawian club is expected to host Arrows in Malawi on August 15 this year for the first preliminary round.
