It’s been nearly five years since Wedson Nyirenda and Baroka FC defied the odds to win the Telkom Knockout Cup in 2018. Nyirenda inspired the Limpopo-based outfit to their first ever major trophy by getting the better of Soweto giants Orland Pirates in a 2-2 draw that was decided on penalties.
Buccaneers’ midfielder Musa Nyatama’s 57th-minute strike cancelled out Jemondre Dickens opener, which saw the game head into extra-time 1-1.
Wedson Nyirenda’s men re-established their lead in the 98th minute, before Zambian playmaker Justin Shonga combined Thembikonsi Lorch for a late equalizer.
Baroka FC eventually ran out 3-2 winners in the penalty shootout against the Orlando Pirates to claim their maiden Telkom Knockout title.
Former Chipolopolo manager Wedson Nyirenda took to his Twitter handle to reminisce about his unprecedented cup triumph with Baroka FC.
He wrote, “On this day, the unimaginable, unthinkable, and unbelievable happened. A small, unfancied team from the LIMPOPO Province did their people some pride. gave the locals something to smile about for the very first time. Beating the huge Buccaneer Orlando Pirates in the TELKOM FINAL. A Memorable”
“We managed the game very well and did not fear the mighty Pirates but only respected them. I knew it was coming home because signs were all over,” the Zanaco FC coach added.
Wada wishes Baroka all the best
Nyirenda further recounts, “Sometimes it doesn’t matter how huge the budget or capital injection is. It is the quality and type of work ethic employed in the project that matter. It is from humble beginnings that great things come from. Thank you, Mphahlele, for believing in me. Wishing you and team all best”
Wedson Nyirenda parted ways with Baroka FC back in December 2019, following his memorable stint in South Africa.
