On Thursday last week, a TNM Super League match in Malawi between Kamuzu Barracks and Dedza Dynamos at Civo Stadium started with 10 players to each team. The eleventh player for each team opted to sit on the bench.

After 15 minutes, when the two, Barracks defender Mike Mtonyo and Dedza midfielder Lameck Gamphani, entered the pitch, purporting match referee Easter Zimba to book the duo.

And the Super League of Malawi general secretary Williams Banda has told the media that they are still waiting for an official report from Sulom’s officials before taking appropriate action.

However, Banda explained that there is nothing wrong with a team fielding 10 players as the law state that a team can field seven players.

Why did the referee issue yellow cards?

Although Banda underlined that each team need at least seven players, the competition’s regulations were adhered to, and yellow cards were flashed.

“Sulom officials were present at the match, we hope we will have a report as soon as possible as we need to act on time,” he added.

Banda said this is the first time this season this has happened. He said last year there was another similar incident.

“In the previous year, each of the implicated players received a red card. We will comprehend what transpired so that we can make a decision,” he added.
