After defeating Mzuzu City Hammers, Mighty Mukuru Wanderers, one of Malawi’s oldest clubs, won the Castel Challenge Cup, capping out the 2024 football season.

Sama Thierry of Cameroon scored the match’s lone goal two minutes into the second half as Wanderers won the final 1-0 at Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe on Saturday.

Wanderers have received 55 million Malawi Kwacha (US$31,350) for winning the trophy with the runners-up going home with 25 million Malawi Kwacha (US$14,250)

The 2025 season will begin in March, and this was the last cup before Malawi’s football calendar entered an off-season.

No team has won a double this season as a result of Wanderers’ victory in Castel Cup, FCB Nyasa Big Bullets’ victory in the Airtel Top 8 Cup, Silver Strikers’ league victory, and the Blue Eagles’ FDH Bank Cup victory.

Wanderers captain Lawrence Chaziya.

Bullets only defended one title this season after winning every trophy to set their first record the previous season.

After a poor showing by the team, Wanderers lost both their head coach and their assistant.

Wanderers signed Burundian coach Nsanzurwimo Ramadhan at the beginning of the season, but he resigned. His assistant, Meck Mwase, took over, but he resigned again in October. They then hired Bob Mpinganjira, who had helped the team win the trophy, as a reserve coach.
