Mark Harrison has resigned as Mighty Mukuru Wanderers’ coach in Malawi, only minutes after losing to FCB Nyasa Big Bullets in the Castel Cup semifinals.
Defeat for Harrison meant that Wanderers finished the year trophyless when he was given targets to win the league and two cup trophies.
In the league, Harrison finished third and did not reach the final for all three cup tournaments in Malawi.
When everyone assumed that his decision to resign was motivated by the team’s poor performance, Harrison claims he made the choice based on ‘internal and external factor.’
In his letter addressed to the club’s board, Harrison said: “There are many reasons for my decision, some internal of the club itself but also external factors within Malawian football.”
He added: “I would also like to thank you for all the support you have given me and my family during my time with the Club, it has been greatly appreciated in the very difficult circumstances we have constantly experienced throughout the 2023 season.”
Harrison arrived in Malawi in September last year to work as the technical director for the team. In just two months, he doubled as head coach following the sacking of Alex Ngwira over leaked audio in which Ngwira was accusing Harrison of interference.
In December, he guided his team to the Airtel Top 8 trophy, beating the Bullets on post-match penalties.
The club’s board secretary, Chancy Gondwe, said the team has accepted the resignation of Harrison and wished him well.
