Malawi head coach Kalisto Pasuwa says the country’s football is heading in the right direction but has called for more time to deliver consistent results.
Pasuwa was speaking after his side lost 3-0 on post-match penalties to Botswana following a 1-1 draw in regulation time during a friendly match commemorating Malawi’s 61 years of independence.
The former Zimbabwe coach noted that while Malawi has improved its build-up play, the team continues to struggle in the final third.
“About today’s match, we dominated—we could have been 3 up in the first half, but we failed to put the ball beyond. Yet, the opposition came and we were punished in the first minutes of the second half.
“The same old story. We have been talking of building a team, and in other areas, we are playing well from the back going forward, but it’s in the last third where we are making mistakes.
“These are the same old mistakes in the transition. Improvement—you can’t go from zero to seven. You go one up to five, and I think we are coming up. If they give us time, we will be there,” said Pasuwa.
Since his appointment in October last year, Pasuwa has overseen 12 matches, winning four, drawing two, and losing six.
However, under his guidance, Malawi had a poor showing at this year’s COSAFA Cup—failing to register a win or score a goal in three matches—finishing bottom of Group B with just one point.
