John Ochieng, a Zanaco football Club midfielder, has earned his first call-up to the Kenya national team that is preparing for the 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers.

Ochieng has been a regular in Wedson Nyirenda’s side, which has struggled to contend for honours this season.

However, his individual standout performances have not gone unnoticed, with Harambee Stars coach Engin Firat including the defensive midfielder in his squad for the crucial matches against Burundi and Ivory Coast.

Speaking to Kenya’s Capital FM, Ochieng expressed his excitement over his first Harambee Stars call-up.

Ochieng is optimistic that he can make a significant impact in Kenya’s quest for their first-ever World Cup appearance.

“The goal shifts to working hard in camp and making a debut,” said Ochieng to Capital FM. “I want to be part of the team that will be best remembered for delivering the World Cup ticket. It is possible if we believe in ourselves.”

Ochieng’s latest match was on Saturday, when the Bankers suffered a 1-0 defeat at Sunset Stadium to Mutondo Stars in Week 33 of the Zambian Super League.
