Samuel Eto’o has been accused of match-fixing following a leaked audio recording in which he was allegedly heard talking to a Cameroonian club official.

The four-time African Footballer of the Year has been president of the Cameroon Football Federation (Fecafoot) since December 2021.

He was accused of assisting in match-fixing in Cameroon’s second tier in July after a recording of him speaking with someone claiming to be Valentine Nkwain, president of Victoria United and known as ‘Bobdidy,’ was made public.

According to Camfoot, Eto’o allegedly promised to promote the club from the second division by manipulating matches.

However, both Eto’o and Nkwain have denied the allegation.

Last week, a group of Cameroonian football officials wrote an open letter to Fifa, alleging that the world governing body had “remained silent” on the allegations levelled against Eto’o despite “numerous complaints and reminders from Cameroonian football actors.”

The signatories of the letter included Fecafoot executive committee member Guibai Gatama as well as the president and vice president of the Professional Football League of Cameroon.

On Friday, various media reports claimed that Eto’o was being investigated by the police for match-fixing allegations, but his lawyers have since denied it.

French law firm Vey & Associes which is representing the former Barcelona and Inter Milan striker, has denied that the 42-year-old has been notified of legal proceedings against him, describing the reports as “rumours”.

While those against Eto’o’s Fecafoot administration continue to protest, it remains to be seen what will happen amid multiple accusations against him.
