Namibian champions African Stars Football Club have revealed intentions of reaching the group stages of the 2023/24 CAF Champions League.
African Stars and Zambia’s champions Power Dynamos will face off in the CAF Champions League’s first round. And the winner would play Tanzania’s Simba SC in the pre-group round.
Africa Stars executive director Salomo Hei is optimistic about his team’s chances of progressing through to the CAF Champions League group stage.
“I firmly believe we stand a very good chance of progressing to the next round,” Hei told New Era Newspaper.
“Playing against Power Dynamos will be a good test for us, as it will show how good African Stars are,” he stated.
He noted that his team, which is making its first appearance in continental football since 2019, will benefit from playing Power Dynamos.
African Stars have been on the marketing reinforcing the squad ahead of their third participation in the CAF Champions League.
Former Red Arrows defender joined African stars.
Red Arrows defender Joseph Lungu, a former champion of the Zambian Super League, has just joined the team. Lungu was on loan to Napsa Stars Football Club, the previous season.
Additionally, Calvin Spiegel, Vaitavera Tjatindi, Dennis Tjizumaue, Angelo Kuezi, and Nigeria’s Hammed Oyeniyi all have joined African Stars.
“We have a target to reach the group stage,”-Hei said.
Hei is confident the club will be able to meet its target of reaching the group stages.
“The reason why we sought players from the continent is that we have an Africa campaign ahead, and successful African teams in such competitions often include foreign players,” Hei stated.
“We’re trying to advance past the group stage. We are making our third effort, and we’ve learnt from our mistakes’,” said Hei.
The first leg is slated to take place in Windhoek from August 18–20, and the second leg is slated for August 25–27.
