2012 African Champions, Zambia pulled off a late equalizer to earn a hard-fought 1–1 draw against Mali in their 2025 AFCON opening group A match at the Mohammed V Stadium on Monday.
Zambia have never lost their opening group match since the 2006 AfCON edition went down in the 64th minute.
Before that, the Chipolopolo Boys relied on debutant goalie, Willard Mwanza to save a 41st minute spot kick awarded to Mali, after rookie defender, Matthews Banda committed a foul in the 18 yard area.
In post match interview Sichone attributed the result to patience against against what he termed a “strong opponent“, Mali.
“Mali scored early because we gifted them the goal. My team struggled a bit, but I also have to praise the boys for keeping calm and ensuring we left the game at nil all at halftime,” said Sichone.
Sichone praised the goal scorer, Leicester City forward, Patson Daka. Daka equalized for the Southern African nation in additional time.
“I know the quality Patson brings, which is why I kept him on the pitch. I’m happy he scored today. Players like him and young talents like Sabobo Banda and David Simukonda showed character and promise. Young players are the way forward.”
Power Dynamos goalkeeper, making his AFCON debut reacted to his standout performance.
“We expect an open game” -Sichone.
“I was not moved by the referee’s decision to award Mali a penalty. I trusted myself completely. As the Malian came, I just looked at him and knew I was going to stop his kick.” Mwanza said.

Looking ahead to their next AfCON match, Sichone is hopeful for a positive result against Comoros.
The Islanders lost 2-0 to hosts Morocco on the opening day on Sunday.
“Comoros may have lost, but they showed character. Against Zambia, they will come looking to score, so we expect an open game.”
