Ademola Lookman’s brace helped the Super Eagles defeat Cameroon 2-0 in the African Cup of Nations in the last round of 16.
Nigeria thought they had opened the scoring on nine minutes when Semi Ajayi smashed the ball into the net after some chaotic defending from Cameroon.
However, Moroccan referee Redouane Jiyed disallowed the goal for offside after consulting the Video Assistant Referee (VAR).
36 minutes into the enthralling contest, Victor Osimhen, the 2023 CAF Player of the Year dispossessed Cameroon center-half Oumar Gonzalez before finding eventual goal scorer Ademola Lookman with a perfect layoff.
This was an exciting round of 16 match, with Nigeria leading Cameroon 1-0 at the halftime mark.
In the 78th minute, 2022 AFCON Golden Boot winner Vincent Aboubakar made his injury-avoidance group stage debut, which gave the Indomitable Lions a tremendous boost.
In the 86th minute, Nigeria had a chance to win the match, but Nouhou Tolo blocked Ola Aina’s attempt on the line in the six-yard box.

Ultimately, Ademola Lookman put the final dagger in Cameroonian hearts when he fired in the second goal for Nigeria in the 90th minute to complete his brace against Cameroon.

With a 2-0 victory over Cameroon, the Super Eagles advanced to the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations quarterfinals. In the quarterfinals, the 2013 AFCON champions will play Angola in an attempt to win their first championship in more than ten years.
Cameroon has to start over, with FA president Samuel Eto’o at the helm while coach Rigobert Song’s position is in jeopardy with this AfCON elimination.
