Malawi National football team have started the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations ( AfCON) qualifiers on a low after a 3-2 loss to Burundi at Bingu National Stadium on Thursday.

Although it sounds fictitious, members of Malawi’s parliament have questioned Uchizi Mkandawire, the minister of sports, about the reasons behind the Flames of Malawi’s defeat to Burundi.

On Thursday of last week, Malawi’s home 2025 Africa Cup of Nation qualifying match against Burundi ended in a 3-2 loss.

Prior to the match, members of the house had made a request to the speaker of the house to allow them to suspend the deliberation to allow members to watch the game at Bingu National Stadium.

With only four minutes remaining, Malawi conceded, embarrassing the majority of MPs who had gathered at the stadium to watch the match.

During the meeting at parliament yesterday afternoon, former minister of sports who is a member of parliament from Nkhata Bay Central, Simon Vuwa Kaunda rose on point of order asking the sports minister to explain.

“We witnessed a cyclone at Bingu National Stadium when Malawi lost to Burundi, I think it is imperative to ask the minister to address us,” he said.

Lanjesi Nkhoma, a Malawian striker, in action against a Burundian defender.

First deputy speaker of the house Madalitso Kazombo backed Kaunda saying he introduced the right topic as a lot of Malawians follow sports.

However, it was the leader of the house Richard Chimwendo Banda who is the minister of local government who gave an explanation.
