Kings Kangwa comments on perceived Chipolopolo leadership crisis

Serbian-based midfielder Kings Kangwa has weighed in on the increasing debate over the Chipolopolo Boy's captaincy ahead of the AfCON.

Despite some fans, pundits, and former footballers, including Chipolopolo’s legendary defender Elijah Litana, claiming that the Zambia national team is lacking leadership on the pitch, Kings Kangwa thinks otherwise.

The team is currently led by Lubambo Musonda and Rodrick Kabwe, who is the vice captain, both of whom played at the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations. The two have recently been accused of not showing leadership on the pitch.

However, reacting to the claims, the Serbian-based midfielder Kangwa said who wears the armband doesn’t matter as long as they are united.

“I think it doesn’t matter who is the captain,” he told reporters at the National Heroes stadium in Lusaka. “The most important thing is that we have a connection with each and every player.”

Kangwa added: “Yes, we are young and almost the same age as you have said, so it’s even better. We need to be together like we have been; we need to stick together; we need to help each other, even if we are bad or good, so we need to be together. “

The 24-year-old playmaker continued: “It doesn’t matter who is the captain. Everyone is a captain at the end of the day. Everyone is a professional and will play their part in the team.”

Kings Kangwa keen to leave Red Star Belgrade

Meanwhile, Kangwa, who has been an unused substitute for the most of Red Star Belgrade’s games in the last two months, believes the Chipolopolo camp will help him regain match fitness.

“I know I have not played for like two months…… But the most important thing is to keep improving in training and give everything.”

He was unused in his club’s last five matches under manager Barak Bahar, who was sacked two weeks ago.

Kangwa last appeared for Red Star in the Champions League in September. He played the final eight minutes of a group-stage encounter against Manchester City.

When asked if he was considering making a move from the Serbian club, Kangwa responded, “of course.”
