Ahead of Zambia’s Group A opener against Mali on Monday, 2012 Africa Cup of Nations winning defender, Hichani Himonde, feels the technical bench can deliver a winning start.
With opponent and hosts Morocco securing a 2-0 victory over Comoros on Sunday, Zambia must avoid defeat to boast chances of progression.
Speaking in an interview with Bola News, Himonde said the current AfCON tournament is an opportunity for the Chipolopolo to lay a strong foundation.
He attributed his confidence to the experience of the technical bench, noting that the coaches understand what it takes to succeed at the continental showpiece.
“The team is drilled by coaches who have played for the national team and at different AfCONs,” Himonde said.

The former defender also highlighted the balance within the squad, pointing to the blend of youthful talent and seasoned campaigners.
Looking ahead, Himonde said the current squad must be long term project.
“The coaches have selected a very youthful team blended with some experienced players such as Stopilla Sunzu, the team is capable of winning some matches at the AFCON and even qualifying for the quarter-finals,” he added.
