The Chipolopolo Boys drew 1-1 with the Democratic Republic of Congo at the Laurent Pokou Stadium in San Pedro on Wednesday night in their Group F opener.
Despite taking the lead in the 23rd minute through a Kings Kangwa, who lashed the ball into an empty net after a Patson Daka quick throw-in kick after noticing that the Congo’s goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi had dashed out of his line.
The Chipolopolo failed to hold on to the lead as they conceded four minutes later after Cedric Bakambu broke the offside trap and fired a ball across the face of the goal, finding Brentford FC’s Yoane Wissa, who tapped home from close range.
Reacting after the match, Chipolopolo coach Avram Grant said he is now focused on the next game.
“Every game is different and the next one will be different from this one,” Grant told reporters post-match.
“We will surely put in place another tactic to seek victory against Tanzania.”
He admitted that DR Congo was a better side in the game but his team deserved the point.
“It was a difficult match for both teams but DR Congo were much better than us,” admitted Grant.
“We moved the ball well but it was difficult for our attackers against big, strong defenders.”
Zambia managed only one shot on goal, as almost everyone was forced to drop deep and defend.
DR Congo had six shots on goal from their 25 attempts but failed to find a winner.
