The Gambia U-20 national team head coach, Abdoulie Bojang, has summoned a 25-man squad for the 2023 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations which is set to kick off in Egypt starting on February 19th to March 11th.
Bojang has grouped a team comprising both local and foreign-based youngsters for the tournament. The young scorpions are in Group C alongside Tunisia, Zambia, and Benin.
They will kick off their campaign against Tunisia on February 21 before clashing with the young Chipolopolo and the Cheetahs.
Meanwhile, headlining their squad is 20-year-old Bayern Munich prospect Mamin Sanyang.
The forward previously played for TSG 1899 Hoffenheim and Heldenhelm FC’s youth teams before joining Bayern Munich on a free transfer in 2020. He plays as a wide man and behind the striker in the No. 10 role.
“I’m very happy and proud”
Sanyang has expressed his delight at his call-up, describing it as a significant opportunity for him.
“I’m very happy and proud to be selected by the coach for the TotalEnergies U-20 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt. “It is a big opportunity for me, and that’s why I’m excited and looking forward to it.”
Despite being eligible to play for Germany, he said it was obvious he was going to represent The Gambia.
“The coach didn’t have to convince me to play for my country; for me, I would always play for my country,” he said. “I’m also looking forward to representing the senior Scorpions.” It depends on how it comes, but I’m looking forward to the U-20 AFCON in Egypt.”

Sanyang has played 14 matches for the reserve side of the Bavarians in the current season, but he has yet to find the back of the net.
The Young Scorpions qualified for the U-20 AFCON after finishing second to Senegal in the WAFU-A championship last year.
