Former Locomotive Tbilisi sporting director Irakli Khvedeliani has tipped Zambia to perform well at the upcoming Africa Under-20 Cup of Nations in Egypt, praising Boyd Mulwanda for assembling a strong squad.
Zambia is placed in Group A alongside hosts Egypt, South Africa, Tanzania, and Sierra Leone.
Mulwanda has named a solid squad, with Chipolopolo forward Joseph ‘Sabobo’ Banda among the standout players.
Khvedeliani has also urged Zambians to watch out for midfielder Frank Chileshe and striker Bonephanseo Phiri, who both play for his former club, Locomotive Tbilisi.
He told BolaNews in an exclusive interview that the duo has shown great progress since moving to Georgia two years ago and are capable of making an impact if given the opportunity.
“I am very happy because the boys, Frank and Bonnie, deserve the chance to play for the national team,” he said. “The boys came two years ago to Georgia, we had this under a project with Kafue Celtic.
“They got professional status, had good games, and performed very well, and thanks to the performance, the players have a chance to represent their country.”
He said the two players have what it takes to achieve great things in their careers.
“I believe both of them can achieve many more levels in their careers because they have good potential and good skills and we will follow and see,” he said.
Khvedeliani, who is also a certified manager and coach, is a close follower of Zambian football and has, on several occasions, been in the country to spot some talent.
“I am really proud and I would like to wish all Zambian players success in this competition because I think you have collected a good team for this competition and you have many players getting development in foreign leagues and clubs,” he said.
Zambia will play its first game on Sunday, April 27, when they take on Sierra Leone.
