Former midfielder Shadreck Malambo has praised the performances of ZPL National League side Chirundu United and Southern Provincial Division One League side Play It Forward as they advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2026 ABSA Cup.
Six MTN Super League sides – Power Dynamos, FC MUZA, Zanaco FC, Red Arrows, Nchanga Rangers, and Mufulira Wanderers – also secured their spots in Zambia’s only cup competition.
In one of the tournament’s surprises, Chirundu United came back from a 2-0 deficit to draw 2-2 before holding their nerve to win 4-3 on post-match penalties. Meanwhile, Play It Forward scored two second-half goals to eliminate ZPL National League leaders Makeni All Stars from the competition.

Malambo, who won the competition with Red Arrows, Nkana, and Forest Rangers, praised underdog teams from the national and provincial leagues for their energy and competitiveness, noting that even experienced Super League sides can struggle against them.
“The round of 16 draw was fair enough, as we saw how Chirundu United played with energy against the experience that Kabwe Warriors have in their squad. It is good to see, like, Play It Forward reaching the quarterfinals,” Malambo said.
“I think the advantage that most Super League clubs have is experience, as most of their squads are made up of professionals, which is not the case in the lower leagues, where it is about energy and a platform to showcase talent regardless of the result at the end of the match.”

Take them seriously- Malambo
Malambo further said the competition has reached a delicate stage where big teams can be toppled by what he calls “young teams.” He cautioned Zanaco FC and Red Arrows against underestimating Chirundu United and Play It Forward, respectively.
“There is K1.1 million at the end of it, so I don’t see why teams like Chirundu United and Play It Forward wouldn’t be motivated enough to win such monies. Zanaco and Red Arrows should take these teams seriously,” he concluded.
The quarterfinal fixtures of the 2026 ABSA Cup will see Mufulira Wanderers take on FC MUZA, Power Dynamos lock horns with Nchanga Rangers, Zanaco FC face Chirundu United, and Red Arrows clash with Play It Forward.
