Costa Rica takes on Zambia as they conclude their 2023 FIFA Womens World Cup tournament at the Waikato Stadium on Monday morning.
After losing 3-0 to Spain in their World Cup opener, Costa Ricans lost 2-0 to Japan in their second game, giving up 5 goals in total.
On the other hand, Zambia’s World Cup campaign began with a humiliating 5-0 loss to Japan, followed by another 5-0 loss to Spain in their next encounter, conceding a total of 10 goals in two games.
Costa Rica and Zambia are third and fourth placed in Group H without a win. The two sides can pick up their first World Cup points with a victory in the last group match.
FIFA World Rankings suggest that Costa Rica go into Monday’s contest as favourites, with Las Ticas ranked 41 places above Zambia.
Both teams have yet to win a World Cup match
While their hopes of making the knockout rounds are over, the Copper Queens will be hoping to record their first win at a Women’s World Cup.
The Southern African nation will aim to find the net, and they can draw inspiration from the fact that they scored eight goals in their final three matches during the tour of Europe prior to the tournament.
