Espanyol fans cut short Barca title celebrations

Barcelona won La Liga on Sunday night but their celebrations were cut short by a mob of relegation-threatened Espanyol fans who invaded the pitch.

The losing fans invaded the field to put an end to the celebrations as Barcelona players and their traveling supporters won their first La Liga championship in four years.

Robert Lewandowski scored twice in the first half, while Alejandro Balde and Jules Kounde were also on target as Barcelona got a 4-2 victory that secured the title. They are now 14 points ahead of second-placed Real Madrid.

At the residence of their neighbors, the Catalan giants won their first La Liga championship since 2018/19, but the celebrations turned ugly as players from Barcelona were escorted off the field by pitch invaders at full time.

And Barcelona coach, Xavi said that after ten months of work and sacrifice, they finally deserve to win the title.

“It’s a magnificent feeling, work done. Ten months of work and sacrifice. We sealed La Liga with a magnificent game, we were brilliant, the fans deserve it, the club deserves it, and it provides us stability and assurance that things are going well.

And Xavi defended his players, who celebrated at full time, which angered Espanyol fans, who invaded the pitch, with Barcelona players running down the tunnel to escape.

“The celebration is normal, but I know we are not at home, and we can’t lack respect. I know it’s difficult to control but I told them the best thing would be to get inside now.” he explained.

The League title was the first for Barcelona manager Xavi, who added to his winners’ medal having won the league title on eight occasions as a player at Camp Nou.

This season the Catalans have been strong defensively only conceding just 11 goals in 34 games so far and at home, they have only allowed two goals this season.

Barcelona have won La Liga with four games to spare. and after a couple of years of rebuilding and trying to re-establish themselves as a serious force especially after Lionel Messi left, the Catalans will be happy with the League title success.
