Ackim Mumba’s goal was enough to secure Red Arrows’ second Samuel Zoom Ndlovu Charity Shield after beating Power Dynamos 1-0 at Nkoloma Stadium in Lusaka on Sunday.
After a goalless first half in which the defending Super League champions dominated possession and created several chances, the Airmen remained solid at the back, thwarting Dynamos’ attacks.
However, in the 80th minute, Red Arrows, who had created fewer chances, won a free kick metres away from the 18-yard box, and Mumba stepped up to slot home the only goal of the match.
With five minutes added on, Dynamos won a penalty in the final minute of play. Substitute Ronel Manyanga stepped up, but his spot kick was brilliantly saved by Charles Kalumba to seal victory for the Airmen and make it back-to-back wins over the Kitwe side in two cup competitions — the ABSA Cup and Charity Shield.
Despite the victory, Arrows head coach Chisi Mbewe remained grounded, saying Power Dynamos is still the best team in the country.
“Power has got good technical staff, they have got good players, its a good team. But I think sometimes football being what it is, things like this happen. I think they’ve got a good team.”
Mbewe also stated that his team is developing well.
“We are also the best team. I think the results could show. We are, we are, we are coming up. We are I think we are doing a lot of things right, and that’s the reason why we’re able to even produce such kind of results.”
Meanwhile, Zesco Ndola Girls FC also lifted the Women’s Charity Shield after beating Green Buffaloes 2-1.
The Florence Mwila-coached side will now shift their attention to defending the ZPL Women’s Super League title.
