Yoane Wissa scored DR Congo’s first-ever FIFA World Cup goal to salvage a shock 1-1 draw against Portugal in their World Cup opener at Houston Stadium.

João Neves had given Portugal a sixth-minute lead, but the Europeans struggled to build on their advantage as Wissa levelled on the stroke of half-time to earn the Leopards a share of the points in Group K.

It was a frustrating outing for Cristiano Ronaldo, who poked two half-chances wide of the post as he fell short of another record. The Portuguese captain has now gone five World Cup matches without scoring.

Meanwhile, Ghana kicked off their campaign with a 1-0 victory over Panama on Wednesday.

Caleb Yirenkyi scored a dramatic 95th-minute winner as the Black Stars left it late to secure all three points.

In a match that produced few clear-cut chances for either side, Yirenkyi turned home Brandon Thomas-Asante’s cross deep into second-half stoppage time to seal the win.

After the opening round of matches, four African nations — Tunisia, South Africa, Algeria and Senegal — suffered defeats. Morocco, DR Congo, Egypt and Cape Verde recorded draws, while Ghana and Ivory Coast were the only African teams to register victories.
