While Zanaco fans may be buzzing with confidence that their team can contend for the MTN Super League title this season, sitting just three points behind leaders Red Arrows, head coach Numba Mumamba insists that winning the league is not among their targets.
Zanaco recorded an emphatic 2-0 home victory over Nkana FC on Saturday to further cement their place in the top four. However, Numba said he is not thinking about delivering an eighth league title for the Bankers this season.
“For us our target will not change; looking at where we are coming from, we are trying to rebuild the team,” Numba said when asked by this reporter whether his side would adjust their ambitions as the campaign progresses.
“I think we will start looking at winning the championship next season when we beef up the team. For now finishing in the top four will be okay for us,” he emphasized.
When reminded that there is no prize for finishing in the top four, Numba maintained that he would still be satisfied with such an outcome this season.
“We are looking at where we are coming from so we have to build a team that will compete favourably next season.”
Zanaco began the campaign strongly, topping the league table for three consecutive weeks, with Numba last year telling reporters that his side would be difficult to leapfrog.
However, after surrendering the top spot late in December, Numba revised his stance, stating that the focus is not on winning the title but on rebuilding a team that battled relegation last season.
