Dubbed the next big star in Zambian women’s football, Evarine Susan Katongo has experienced both highs and lows in her career. At just 22, she has already featured at two Olympic Games (2020 and 2024), one FIFA Women’s World Cup, and twice at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations — but things haven’t always gone as she had hoped.

When she burst onto the scene in 2022, Katongo was reportedly a target for South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns. However, she is understood to have turned down the offer due to a contractual dispute with her former club, ZISD FC.

Three years later, now playing for Green Buffaloes Women’s FC and having recently completed military training with the Zambia Army, Katongo says she is finally ready for a move abroad.

“In the next five years, I don’t see myself playing in the ZPL (local league). Once I get an opportunity to move abroad, I will definitely take it. And I’m confident that opportunity is coming,” she told BolaNews in an exclusive interview.

When asked why her move overseas has taken so long, Katongo explained there was no major issue.

“There hasn’t been any problem. I think what delayed my move this year was the military training I underwent. But now that I’m fully trained as a soldier, I’m ready. Once an opportunity comes, I’ll take it.”

BolaNews understands that Katongo’s representatives are currently offering her to clubs in Eastern Europe and China, with hopes that a deal can be secured soon.

Following an impressive season with Green Buffaloes, Katongo was named Fans’ Player of the Season at last Saturday’s inaugural ZPL Eden University Awards Gala.
