Malawian topflight club Moyale Barracks’ first-choice goalkeeper, Simeon Harawa, has tragically died after collapsing during a morning run.
The news has shocked the Malawian football community, especially given that Harawa played in his team’s 1-1 league draw against Civil Service United on Saturday.
On April 21, he also started in the Airtel Top 8 quarterfinal against Silver Strikers in Lilongwe. He was in goal when Moyale secured a 2-0 away win against Kamuzu Barracks, another military side.
Harawa had been in impressive form, starting all three of Moyale’s league matches this season, as well as the cup tie. He conceded only two goals across those appearances and, according to a source at the club, had not reported any injuries and played full matches with solid performances.
“It was shocking to hear of his passing,” said a source from the team. “He normally goes for a morning run before team training. I was at the training ground waiting for him when I was informed he had been taken to the hospital. Later, we were told he was pronounced dead on arrival.”
Moyale Barracks FC released a statement confirming Harawa’s death but did not disclose the cause.
“Moyale Barracks FC regrets to announce the passing of our goalkeeper, Simeon Harawa, who died on April 29, 2025. Born on March 25, 1995, Harawa joined the club in 2015 and the Malawi Defence Force in 2019. He was a dedicated player and teammate,” read the statement.
The club also confirmed that he will be buried on May 1 with full military honors.
The Football Association of Malawi also released a tribute, describing Harawa as a talented and passionate goalkeeper whose dedication inspired many.
“His passing is a huge loss to Malawian football,” the association said.
