Kamanga and Mweemba in heated war of words ahead of FAZ elections

Mweemba has accused the FAZ secretariat of manipulating the AGM agenda to benefit incumbent Andrew Kamanga, who in turn has accused Mweemba of trying to disrupt the elections.

The campaign team of the incumbent Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) president, Andrew Kamanga, has hit back at rival Keith Mweemba, following a press release in which the FC Muza proprietor accused FAZ Secretary General Reuben Kamanga and his deputy of manipulating the May 9th elective Annual General Meeting (AGM) agenda to favour incumbent Andrew by avoiding key financial and statutory discussions.

In a strongly worded response, Andrew’s camp dismissed Mweemba’s claims, questioning his silence on key issues, including directives from the National Sports Council that halted FAZ executive meetings and the AGM. The statement also challenged Mweemba to clarify his position on the legitimacy of the FAZ executive committee and its mandate following the conclusion of 10 out of 13 provincial elections.

The campaign team further pointed out Mweemba’s apparent acceptance of a FIFA directive allowing outgoing officials to chair recent provincial AGMs, questioning why he only objected when it came to the upcoming AGM scheduled for May 9th.

“We find it contradictory that Mr Mweemba attended seven provincial AGMs without protest, only to now question the process when it no longer aligns with his agenda,” said Andrew through his campaign team in a statement shared on Facebook on Monday.

Accusing Mweemba of political posturing, the statement insisted that Andrew has no issue presenting FAZ’s 2024 financial statements—provided the National Sports Council allows him to chair the meeting. This is after Mweemba urged councillors to reject the agenda of the forthcoming AGM if it doesn’t address financial reports and other statutory discussions.

“Mr [Andrew] Kamanga is ready and willing to present the financials at the reconvened AGM. The only obstacle is the ongoing interference preventing him from executing his constitutional role as president,” the statement added.

The statement concluded by warning against “deliberate attempts to discredit” Kamanga and emphasised the need to proceed with elections to ensure FAZ regains a fully functioning executive.
