Despite an underwhelming performance at the 2024 Paris Olympics, where they lost three consecutive games, 3-0 to the United States, 6-5 to Australia, and 4-1 to Germany, the Copper Queens have risen two places in the latest FIFA/Coca-Cola Women’s World Ranking.
In June, Bruce Mwape’s lasses achieved their highest point total in the rankings, rising one spot to 64th. They achieved their highest-ever point total of 1396.7, which is now 1411.48, as well as their best-ever table position by qualifying for the 2024 Paris Olympics.
The Copper Queens had a chance to propel higher in the rankings following the Olympics, but their disastrous campaign has seen them fail to leapfrog both Morocco and South Africa, who are third and second on the continent, respectively.
Nigeria has not gained or lost any points despite an underwhelming Olympic campaign in which they did not win a single game and lost all three of their group stage matches. However, the Super Falcons remain Africa’s top-ranked nation.
Globally, the USA have reclaimed the top spot in the world following their victorious Women’s Olympic Football Tournament campaign where they claimed their fifth Olympic gold medal in Paris, and their first since London 2012, by edging past Brazil 1-0 in the final.
England is now second, one spot ahead of reign World Cup winners Spain, who are third. Germany, who won the bronze medal at the Olympics, has remained in fourth place.
