Bingu Stadium cleared to host all matches

Bingu Stadium can now host all matches, including AFCON qualifiers, after CAF lifted the ban.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has approved Malawi’s Bingu National Stadium to host all matches following its second assessment.

Last month, the CAF blacklisted the stadium and 25 other countries due to their poor standing.

Malawi, however, protested the ban, claiming that the CAF did not inspect the stadium.

“They used old footage in assessing the stadium. We have sent current footage to them so they have a look at them. If they are not impressed, they can make a physical assessment,” Malawi’s sports ministry spokesperson Macmillan Mwale had said.

CAF approved the stadium two weeks ago, allowing it to host only the first and second preliminary rounds of the 2024 CAF Interclub Competitions.

However, yesterday CAF issued another communication allowing the stadium to host matches.

Gomezgani Zakazaka, the Football Association of Malawi (FAM) competitions and communications director, confirmed the news to BolaNews.

“Yes I can confirm that the stadium has been approved to host matches. We are happy for that as host matches away from home become a complicated move with expenses,” he said.

Following the development, the Burundi national team has decided to play their home games at Bingu because their stadiums have not been approved.

Malawi, which is in the same group as Burundi, Senegal, and Burkina Faso, will face Burundi on September 5 before flying to Burkina Faso, while Burundi will stay in Malawi to host Senegal on September 9.

Aside from that, the venue will host FCB Nyasa Big Bullets’ CAF Champions League match against Zambia’s Red Arrows on August 15 this year.
