Malawi National Women’s Football Team striker Tabitha Chawinga has signed a three-year contract with French Women’s Football League champions Olympique Lyonnais Feminin (Lyon).
Tabitha, who was on loan from Chinese club Wuhan Jiangda to PSG, says she chose to stay in France despite receiving multiple offers from the United States, where her sister Temwa plays for Kansas City Current in the National Women’s Soccer League.
“It was not easy to settle for Lyon but the deal was fine; yes, I can say a lucrative deal, hence staying put in France,” she said.
BolaNews understands she will be the highest-paid player at the club. “I cannot tell you the exact fee I am getting but yes, it is good enough,” she said.
Lyon is understood to have paid around €325 to Wuhan Jiangda for the Malawian striker.
Chawinga said she decided to join the eight-time UEFA Champions League winners after her PSG coach, Jocelyn Prêcher, left the club.
“This is the coach who made me join PSG from China,” she revealed. “With the coach leaving the club, I thought it was also good to move…. And I had to go through offers. PSG expressed interest to have me and other clubs within and including the USA but excuse me, I will not name them,” she said.
Tabitha said her plans now are to win the Champions League with Lyon plus the Ballon d’Or.
With PSG, Tabitha won the Player of the Season award, the Golden Boot award and Uefa Women’s Best XI.
Back in 2022, she also won the Golden Boot while on loan at Inter Milan in Italy.
