Mphasi, who is currently in camp with the Malawi national team, scored the winning goal in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers for the Flames in their 1-0 win over Liberia on Friday.

The 19-year-old striker, who plays for Zambia’s Kabwe Warriors FC, came on as a second-half substitute but proved vital in Patrick Mabedi’s team.

Mphasi joined Warriors on a season-long loan deal from Shamuel Academy at the beginning of this season.

He so far has four assists in 10 league matches for Warriors who are fifth in the standings.

Mphasi tells BolaNews that the Zambian league is competitive and it has helped him gain a lot of experience.

“To me, the Zambian league is okay; it is strong,” he said in an exclusive interview. “It is the reason I have performed well for the national team…And it is the reason I received the call-up. There is everything you can ask for in the Zambian league.”

Mphasi added, “You need to have power and pace if you have to make it in the Zambian League. Every game that you play in the league is like a final. For me, Zambian football is just okay.”

At the 2023 Cosafa tournament, which Zambia won, Mphasi featured in four matches and put in brilliant performances.
