Ghana, Cameroon among African giants yet to secure Afcon slots

Ghana to face the Central Africa Republic, Tanzania must beat Algeria to qualify, Mozambique needs a point to progress.

Ghana is one of the teams vying for one of the nine slots up for grabs as the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers come to a close.

Fourteen countries, including hosts Ivory Coast, have already qualified for the competition, which will take place in January 2024.

On match day six of the qualifiers, two past AFCON champions Ghana and DR Congo need results to qualify.

Group E: A win would be enough for Angola against Madagascar

The 2010 Africa Cup hosts, Angola will this Thursday host already eliminated Madagascar in a make-or-break fixture.

Angola needs just a win to secure qualification as they trail both Ghana and Central African Republic by one point.

Ghana needs a point against CAR

Against, the Central African Republic, the Black Stars will need to be at their best after having a difficult qualification campaign. The Black Stars can afford to qualify with a draw.

Group C goes to the wire!
Burundi can upset Cameroon on the final day of qualifiers and make a return to the biggest stage as group leader Namibia with five points in a three-team group await their fate.

Group F: Tanzania needs to punch above their weight.

The Taifa Stars have a tough task away in Algeria as they will be facing the undefeated Desert Foxes. It will require a miracle for Tanzania to win.

Uganda must win!

When the Cranes play eliminated Niger on Thursday, they need a victory to move above regional rival Tanzania.

Group G: Gambia and Congo to define own fate.

With Mali already qualified, and The Gambia and Congo are squabbling with each other for the final spot. Congo must win to qualify whereas Gambia needs a point to qualify.

Group I: All for the taking

No team had already qualified for the AFCON as of the final day of the qualifiers, so everyone was still in the running.

DR Congo turned around their qualification campaign with a 2-0 win over Gabon and will now face Sudan as Gabon and Mauritania face off.

A draw would help the situation, but the Leopards must be cautious of the threat posed by Mauritania and Gabon, both of which have 7 points. The top teams currently have 9 points.

Group L: Mozambique or Benin with an away 0-1 win over their match-day 6 opponents, Mozambique needs a point to qualify against Benin in front of home supporters. It’s an unpredictable tie.
